On May 27, 2026, the Council for Local Government Digital Transformation (GDX) held the first session, #0, of its new series, 'Relation Population Lab,' which re-examines 'relation population' from the perspectives of local governments and corporate fields. Masato Ito, a lecturer and researcher at the Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan, served as the lecturer, drawing a large number of participants from across the country.
In response to the positive feedback, the council announced a re-run of session #0 on June 10, 2026, and will host session #1, 'Relation Population x Migration/U-turn,' on July 1, 2026. Both sessions will be held online via Zoom, are free to attend, and require prior registration.
Session #0 focused on the theme 'What exactly is relation population?' and covered domestic and international research and policy trends, as well as the forefront of the 'Hometown Resident Registration System.' Participants commented that the perspective that 'ambiguity is acceptable' was helpful for internal policy discussions.
Session #1 will address participants' requests by focusing specifically on 'migration and U-turns.'
