Fujitsu's invention related to high-performance computing units for scientific calculations has been awarded the 'Prime Minister's Award' at the 'FY2026 National Commendation for Invention,' hosted by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, on May 26, 2026.
The award-winning technology, developed by Fujitsu in 2009, enables high-speed and high-precision scientific computing. It was integrated into supercomputers 'K' and 'Fugaku,' which were co-developed with RIKEN. Furthermore, it was adopted into the Arm instruction set architecture and is currently used in Arm-based servers worldwide, receiving recognition for its significant contribution to industrial development.

About the Awarded Invention (1) Background and Conventional Technology Scientific calculations involve complex mathematical functions, which are often slow to process in software. Traditional hardware implementations like CORDIC were slow or lacked necessary precision.
(2) Invented Technology This invention minimizes circuit overhead and defines dedicated instructions for specific high-speed operations, reducing the number of instructions required for Taylor series expansion pre-processing by about 1/3, while maintaining high calculation precision.
(3) Industrial Application By enabling faster and more accurate simulations, the technology contributes to industrial development and societal safety. It was first used in 'K,' then in 'Fugaku,' and is standardly adopted in Arm's instruction set architecture.
