The Green Coop Union (Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Hakata Ward, Representative Director: Yoko Hidaka, hereinafter "Green Coop"), an association comprising 16 consumer cooperatives primarily in western Japan, has set a goal to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions associated with its business activities by 2027 and is currently implementing initiatives to achieve this goal.
*Net-zero refers to achieving net-zero for Scope 1: direct emissions from our own operations, and Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, steam, and other energy sources.
As part of this initiative, we are promoting "participatory environmental actions" by approximately 430,000 members to reduce CO2 emissions. These initiatives include the following three points:
1. Establishment of a system for the use, return, and recycling of reusable and recyclable containers. 2. Reduction of CO2 emissions associated with transportation by prioritizing the use of domestic products (Food Mileage Campaign). 3. Quantification of behavioral results, accumulation of contributions based on reduction achievements, and utilization for environmental measures.
We are enhancing member participation by creating a system that allows them to easily engage in these activities in their daily lives.
Results for April 2026 (Overall)
The following results were achieved through the three activities:
* CO2 emissions reduced by approximately 750 tons (equivalent to the amount absorbed by about 53,000 cedar trees in one year). * Total number of reusable containers used: approximately 1,190,000 bottles/packs. * Total amount of recycled materials collected: approximately 306 tons. * CO2 reduced by using domestic products: approximately 630 tons. * Contributions based on reductions: approximately 39 million yen in total.
○ Reuse and Recycling Results for April 2026
This initiative aims to reduce waste and suppress greenhouse gas emissions by adopting bottle products such as milk bottles and molded packs made from recycled paper, and by returning and recycling used materials such as food trays, delivery bags, and catalogs. The quantities are monitored monthly. Through this activity, we achieved a CO2 reduction of approximately 119 tons in April 2026.
The collection results for April 2026 are as follows:
Bottles and Packs Used
Milk Bottles
393,271 bottles
Reusable Bottles
221,980 bottles
Egg Molded Packs
584,658 packs
Total: 1,199,909 bottles/packs
Returned Items
Trays
7,201 kg
Sorting Bags
6,143 kg
Catalogs
293,480 kg
Total: 306,824 kg
○ Food Mileage Campaign for April 2026
When procuring ingredients, Green Coop has a policy of prioritizing domestic products, which have a shorter transportation distance (food mileage) compared to imported products. This is a system designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through everyday shopping behavior.
Through the use of these domestic products, approximately 630 tons of CO2 were reduced in April 2026.
○ Contribution Funds for April 2026
We independently contribute funds each month based on the amount of CO2 reduced by member actions. These funds are used for initiatives such as mangrove reforestation, introduction of EV trucks, reduction of dry ice, and the creation of systems for a decarbonized society and recycling.
In April 2026, a total of 39,050,796 yen (approximately 39 million yen) was accumulated through these activities.

In 2018, the Green Coop Union was established together with 16 consumer cooperatives and various organizations in Kyushu (Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Kagoshima), Kinki (Osaka, Hyogo, Shiga), Chugoku (Tottori, Okayama, Shimane, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi), and Fukushima, including the Green Coop Consumers' Cooperative Federation, the Green Coop Social Welfare Corporation, and labor cooperatives. We have been working as consumer cooperatives rooted in our respective regions, sharing and cooperating with what we have as if we were one Green Coop. Starting from the desire of mothers to "want to feed safe and secure food to their children," we aim to enrich our respective communities.
