Rokko Mountain Tourist Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nada-ku, Kobe City, President: Akiteru Senoo) operates the Rokko Highland Botanical Garden, where the colonies of spring fairies, Katakuri and Kiku-zaki Ichige, are at their best.

◆ Katakuri (Lily Family)

A perennial plant that grows widely in forests and wildlands from Hokkaido to Kyushu and blooms only on clear days.

The above-ground parts, such as leaves, are present until May when the forest floor is bright, after which they go dormant until the following spring. Plants with such life cycles are called spring ephemerals, and Katakuri is one of them. It bears one flower on a 10-20 cm tall flower stalk, and it takes about 7-8 years from seed to bloom. In the past, it was used as a raw material for katakuriko (potato starch), and high-quality starch made from its bulbs was used, but now potato starch is used as a substitute.

In the garden, approximately 5,000 plants are blooming sequentially, and they are expected to be enjoyed until late April.

◆ Kiku-zaki Ichige (Buttercup Family)

A perennial plant that grows on the forest floor in deciduous broad-leaved forest zones. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it bears only one flower on a flower stalk of about 15 cm.

In the garden, colonies are at their best in various places within the wooded areas, and since they bloom in the same location as Katakuri, you can enjoy seeing them side-by-side.

They are expected to be enjoyed until mid-April.

Event Information "Rokko Highland Botanical Garden x Koyomi Seikatsu / Hanabiyori"

Exhibitions on the 72-hour seasonal calendar and flower colors, and a flower-collecting stamp rally will be held. Enjoy time appreciating and cherishing the four seasons along with the flowers of alpine plants from the Alps, Himalayas, and Japan.
