This event will feature a mini-lecture to learn about Obon in a fun way and a painting experience to create your own original lantern. Completed lanterns can be taken home as they are, and can be used for summer vacation free research or free crafting, as well as for Obon decorations at home.
In recent years, opportunities to experience Obon rituals at home have decreased, and children have fewer opportunities to come into contact with Japanese traditional culture. This event aims to provide an opportunity for parents and children to enjoy learning about Obon culture while thinking about Japanese summer customs and family connections. Last year's event had some sessions where applications exceeded the capacity, and it was well-received by many families. We will hold it again this year as an opportunity to create summer vacation memories and learn, and we sincerely look forward to your participation.
Why convey "Obon" to children now?
Obon is a Japanese traditional culture where families gather to remember and honor their ancestors and deceased loved ones. However, in recent years, due to nuclear families and changes in lifestyle, opportunities to actually experience the meaning and customs of Obon have decreased.
As a company involved in memorial services, we believe it is an important role to convey the Japanese traditional culture of "Obon" to the next generation of children. In this event, we will provide a fun learning experience while answering children's simple questions such as "What is Obon?" and "Why do we decorate lanterns?"
Three features of the workshop
1. Mini-lecture to understand "What is Obon?" We will explain the origin of Obon and the role of lanterns in an easy-to-understand way for children. You can enjoy learning about Japanese summer culture, such as "a light to welcome ancestors" and "an important event for family gatherings."
2. One-of-a-kind! Original lantern making Draw freely on a plain white lantern with colored pens. You can create a one-of-a-kind work with your child's free imagination, such as favorite characters, summer memories, or messages to family members.
Lantern making during the previous event. You can experience lantern making as a family.
3. Can be used directly for summer vacation homework! Also useful for free research and free crafting This event is an experiential program that combines "learning, making, and taking home." By combining what you learned about Obon with the work you created yourself, you can use it for summer vacation free research or free crafting. The completed lantern can also be used as an actual Obon decoration at home.

"Learning" and "Memory Making" to enjoy with parents and children
Lantern making is not just a craft experience. It is also an opportunity for natural conversations between parents and children, such as "Obon has this kind of meaning, doesn't it?" and "Let's try decorating for Obon at home!"
We look forward to the participation of many families as an opportunity to think about Japanese culture and family connections, along with creating summer vacation memories.
Comments from staff
"There are various experience events during summer vacation, but with this workshop, we want to provide an experience that leads not only to 'fun' but also to 'learning' and 'conversations with family.' The completed lanterns can be sent to family members living far away in the included envelope.
Through lantern making, we hope that children will become interested in Japanese traditional culture and have an opportunity to talk about Obon with their families."
Completed lanterns can be mailed in the included envelope.
