Higashiosaka City Museum of Art Special Exhibition "Photo Exhibition Michio Hoshino: Traveling Through Eternal Time" flyer image.

Michio Hoshino, who yearned for the nature of the north since his boyhood and lived in the Arctic land of Alaska.

He died in an accident while on assignment, and even 30 years later, he continues to fascinate many fans with his moving photographs of nature and animals and his beautiful writing. The vast nature of the Arctic, the wildlife and people who live there, and the myths that have been passed down through generations...

Through many "encounters," Hoshino deepened his thoughts and grew as a photographer.

This exhibition offers a comprehensive view, from records of the Alaskan village he first set foot in at the age of 20 to photographs taken on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia just before his death. It also traces the footsteps of Michio Hoshino, who passed away suddenly without completing his journey, with valuable exhibits including his first letter written at the age of 20 to the village chief of Shishmaref.

We hope you will contemplate Hoshino's new journey, in which he pursued "the relationship between nature and people" through his unfinished body of work.

Michio Hoshino (1952-1996)

Born in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, in 1952. Fascinated by an aerial photograph of an indigenous village in Alaska he saw at the age of 19, he wrote a letter to the village chief. He stayed in Alaska for about three months during his summer vacation at the age of 20. After returning to Japan, his longing for Alaska grew, and he chose the path of a photographer. After graduating from Keio University, he worked as an assistant to animal photographer Mitsutsune Tanaka for two years. In 1978, he enrolled in the University of Alaska, Department of Wildlife Management. Since then, he has documented and published photographs and writings on the theme of Alaska's nature and people. In August 1996, he was suddenly killed by a brown bear attack while on assignment in the Kamchatka Peninsula. He received the Anima Award and the Kimura Ihei Photography Award.
