TOPPAN Inc., a group company of TOPPAN Holdings, currently offers "MOKUMETRIX®", a system that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to quantitatively evaluate emotional perceptions, such as how wood grain impacts the viewer. The company will now add functionality to analyze diverse materials, including stone and metallic finishes, starting in June 2026.
Since developing MOKUMETRIX® in January 2025, TOPPAN has provided the system to the architectural sector, enabling the estimation of emotional evaluations for wood grain patterns. The company has now developed new functions to analyze 18 types of materials, such as stone, metallic finishes, and fabrics. This allows for the objective numerical evaluation of various materials based on user attributes like age and gender.
[Background of Development] In recent years, there has been a growing demand for well-being-focused spatial design that aligns with diverse human sensitivities. As the selection of surface materials for walls and ceilings becomes more complex, meticulous consensus-building is increasingly necessary to share design intentions. Consequently, TOPPAN has added these analysis functions to MOKUMETRIX®, contributing to smoother consensus-building among stakeholders by visualizing the impressions that designs create based on empirical evidence.
[Overview of Updates] - Expansion of Analysis Range AI analysis is now possible for 18 material types, including stone, solid colors, metallic, and fabrics. By setting conditions for the recipient, such as age and gender, users can evaluate materials that are more likely to be preferred by target demographics. - Quantification of Material Characteristics TOPPAN has developed functions to quantify 14 specific characteristics of abstract patterns, such as "glossiness" and "hardness," which are common in stone and metallic finishes, providing metrics for design adjustments.
[Future Objectives] TOPPAN plans to expand the system beyond the architectural sector—such as detached homes, apartments, offices, hotels, and public facilities—to industries including automotive and home appliances, aiming for 2 billion JPY in sales by the end of fiscal 2028.
