Hoshino Resorts' hot spring ryokan brand, 'Kai', launches 'Onsen Culture Iroha' on June 1, 2026, to promote Japan's hot spring culture ahead of its proposed 2030 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage registration. Staff at each facility act as 'masters' to offer hands-on cultural activities. At 'Kai Poroto' in Hokkaido, guests learn about rare moor hot springs and taste silica-rich water. 'Kai Alps' in Nagano features local folklore paper plays and outdoor baths. 'Kai Beppu' in Oita provides custom hot spring mist-making at an on-site laboratory. The program is part of the brand's 15th anniversary project, '30 Ryokans, 30 Onsen Cultures'. Participation is generally free (some optional activities charge fees) and does not require reservations. Brand expansion continues in 2026 and 2027.
