Hyotan Onsen in Beppu, Oita Prefecture (operated by YUNET Co., Ltd.) will offer free 'Summer Vacation Research Worksheets' for elementary school students from Friday, July 17, 2026, to Monday, August 31, 2026. Now in its third year, this initiative aims to support children and parents struggling to choose summer research topics. The worksheets are available for free pickup at the front desk, making them easily accessible to all visitors.

Learning Everyday Science at the Hot Spring: 'Latent Heat and Evaporative Cooling'

This year’s theme is 'Latent Heat and Evaporative Cooling,' focusing on familiar phenomena experienced in daily life and at hot springs—such as the cooling sensation after a bath or why sprinkling water feels refreshing.

The content is carefully simplified for clarity, designed to be understandable even for elementary school students. It includes simple home experiments that families can try together, guiding children through the process of 'investigating, thinking, and summarizing' to complete a full research project.

Helping Families with Summer Vacation Challenges

Every year, many families struggle with the question, 'What should we research for the summer project?' Hyotan Onsen aims not only to provide a relaxing hot spring experience but also to spark opportunities for 'learning' among visiting families, which is why this program continues.

The research worksheets are available free of charge at the Hyotan Onsen front desk with no reservation required. There is no limit on the number of copies, and anyone can take one.

Media Inquiry (For Journalists)

We welcome media coverage of the actual worksheets, the distribution process at the front desk, and filming of the facility’s 'evaporative cooling' mechanisms featured in the worksheets—such as the unique 'Yuyake Take' cooling system that cools the spring water without diluting it. Interviews with the operations manager are also available. We encourage stories on themes such as 'summer vacation research projects,' 'initiatives supporting children’s learning,' and 'learning everyday science at hot springs.' Please contact us below to arrange a visit.
