Key Findings of the Study
The most common skin diseases contracted in swimming pools are "viral warts (verruca vulgaris)" and "molluscum contagiosum." While childhood warts can sometimes heal naturally, it often takes 6 months to over 2 years, during which there is a risk of spreading to other parts of the body or to family members. Treatment should be performed by a dermatologist, with liquid nitrogen therapy being the most common standard procedure.
- 76.3% of parents lack correct knowledge about skin diseases contracted at swimming pools. - 58.7% of parents incorrectly believe that childhood warts heal naturally. - Only 43.0% of respondents correctly identified "dermatology" as the appropriate department for wart treatment.
Terminology
- Viral Warts (Verruca Vulgaris): Benign skin tumors caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) entering through small skin wounds. Infections are common in areas where people walk barefoot, such as pools and public baths. - Molluscum Contagiosum: A skin infection caused by the Molluscum Contagiosum Virus. Characterized by shiny papules, it easily spreads via shared towels or swimming boards. - Liquid Nitrogen Therapy: A treatment that freezes and destroys virus-infected tissue using liquid nitrogen at -196°C. It is typically repeated every 1–2 weeks under insurance coverage.
Survey Results
The survey revealed that 76.3% of parents were unaware of pool infections, and 58.7% mistakenly believe that warts heal on their own. Furthermore, only 43.0% correctly recognized dermatology as the right place for treatment, and 38.7% reported doing nothing in terms of prevention. Increased awareness of correct knowledge before the summer vacation is necessary.
Physician Comment Dr. Kota Takakuwa, Icy Clinic: Consultations for pediatric viral warts clearly increase from late summer through autumn. While completely preventing pool infections is difficult, early detection and treatment can shorten the duration and prevent the spread of infection.
