LiPro (Marriage) Releases Survey Results on Ideal Age Gap for Marriage Partners

IID Inc. (Headquarters: Nakano-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hiroshi Miyakawa) has conducted a survey on the ideal age gap for marriage partners through its婚活-focused media platform "LiPro (Marriage)," targeting 400 unmarried men and women currently or previously engaged in婚活.

Survey Summary

When the partner is older, the most preferred age gap is "+3 to +5 years."

When the partner is younger, the most preferred age gap is "−1 to −2 years."

Over 80% of respondents consider an age difference within ±5 years to be ideal.

Men tend to be more accepting of larger age gaps if their partner is younger.

Women tend to be more accepting of larger age gaps if their partner is older.

＜Ideal Age Gap for Marriage Partner? (When Partner is Older)＞

When the partner is older, the most ideal age gap was "+3 to +5 years" at 49.3%, ranking first. "+1 to +2 years" came second at 28.8%, and "+6 to +9 years" third at 11.0%. Nearly half of respondents indicated that a 3- to 5-year age gap is ideal.

When analyzed by gender, slight differences emerged. While both genders ranked "+3 to +5 years" as first, women showed a higher proportion at 54.0%, exceeding half. Men ranked "no age difference" third and "older partner not acceptable" fifth, indicating a relatively higher number who do not prefer older partners compared to women. Conversely, for women, "10 or more years older is acceptable" ranked fourth, and "older partner not acceptable" received the fewest responses.

When the partner is younger, the most ideal age gap was "−1 to −2 years" at 39.0%, ranking first. "−3 to −5 years" came second at 33.0%, and "−6 to −9 years" third at 10.5%.

As a result, the percentage of respondents who consider an age difference within ±5 years (including no age difference) ideal was:

・When partner is older: 83.1%

・When partner is younger: 81.0%

In both cases, over 80% of respondents expressed this preference.

When analyzed by gender, more differences were observed in the "younger partner" scenario. For men, "−3 to −5 years" ranked first, "−6 to −9 years" second, and "−1 to −2 years" third. For women, "−1 to −2 years" ranked first, "−3 to −5 years" second, and "younger partner not acceptable" third.

It appears that men are more accepting of larger age gaps when their partner is younger, while women are more accepting of larger age gaps when their partner is older.
