Background and Objectives
Japan Home Shield has been holding an outreach program for elementary school students called "Discover the Wonders of Soil Experience Class (Making Sparkling Mud Balls)" since 2014.
As a specialized company in ground engineering that has been closely involved with soil for many years, we wanted to provide children, who have fewer opportunities to touch soil in schoolyards and parks compared to the past, with a chance to learn about soil in a fun way.
Through the school support network supported by the Sumida City Board of Education, we have provided lessons to over 5,000 children to date.
We also aim to provide an opportunity to think about disaster prevention by conveying how the soil beneath our feet is connected to our lives and existence, including its characteristics and the impact of natural disasters.
This activity is also positioned as contributing to SDG Goal 4, "Quality Education for All." This year, it is a summer vacation-exclusive research event where parents and children can think about disaster prevention and SDGs together, so please join us.
"Discover the Wonders of Soil! Sparkling Mud Ball Class 2026" Program
1. The World of Soil You Don't Know (15 minutes)
Scenes from the soil class
JHS staff, who have extensive experience teaching in elementary schools and hold the "Ground Quality Assessor" qualification, will conduct a "Soil Class" that is easy for children to understand.
They will explain the various properties of soil, the ground that supports buildings, and disaster risks such as liquefaction in a fun way, with demonstrations using experimental kits.
2. Sparkling Mud Ball Workshop (75 minutes)
Parents and children making sparkling mud balls
Participants will challenge themselves to make "sparkling mud balls" with their parents, with support from JHS staff.
By actually touching the soil, children can develop an interest and learn about its properties in a fun way.
There are rumors that "adults get hooked too"!?
We encourage parents to enjoy it as well.
