YUGEN Gallery Presents 'Beyond Current and Detritus': A Photo and Sound Exhibition Reflecting on What Flows and Accumulates in Hiroshima, Opening August 1 (Sat)

YUGEN Gallery (4F, KD Minami-Aoyama Building, 3-1-31 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo / operated by Gene Inc.) will present 'Beyond Current and Detritus' by Yuri Kuramoto and Shoko Nakagawa from Saturday, August 1, 2026, to Sunday, August 30, 2026.

This exhibition is a collaborative project by Yuri Kuramoto and Shoko Nakagawa, initiated from the themes of river flow and sedimentation.

The title 'Beyond Current and Detritus' seeks to reframe rivers as a medium connecting our daily lives with distant places. Water flow has long been symbolically represented in myths and metaphors—as the origin of civilization, arteries of trade, or boundaries between life and death. In contrast, this exhibition turns its gaze toward rivers as familiar, universal presences.

The works of these two artists, working in photography and sound respectively, are deeply rooted in the specific locale of Hiroshima. Yet simultaneously, the landscapes and soundscapes emerging from their works possess an anonymity that could belong anywhere.

By focusing on such commonplace yet often overlooked materials, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reaffirm how grand narratives and distant issues are intrinsically connected to our daily lives.

Curated by Isao Yamamoto of Tamentai, an art collective based in Hiroshima, this is the third consecutive exhibition at YUGEN Gallery, following 'Peaceful Use of Time and Machines' in 2024 and 'Hiroshima Midori Toridori' in 2025.

During the exhibition period, artist talks and a curator talk will be held. Artists and the curator will share insights into the perspectives and backgrounds of the works. We warmly invite you to attend.

Additionally, this exhibition is linked to 'MAFIN 2026 (Miyajima Art Festival in the Narrative 2026),' an art project sponsored by our company (planned for November–December 2026 in Hiroshima's Miyajima). During that project, a reconfigured version of this exhibition will be presented in Hiroshima. Further details will be announced later.

Resting my cheek on my hand by the window, I listen to the other side of the water

A river belonging to no one, separating this side from that

The river does not burn

The river is not lost

Holding the past in its depths, it continues to flow in the present

A bridge is built, yet the opposite shore remains the opposite

The waterfronts are connected

Yuri Kuramoto

1997 Born in Hiroshima Prefecture

2022 Completed Master's Program, Tama Art University

After studying in Norway, she is currently based in Tokyo as a photographic artist. Her work explores the relationships between monuments, landscapes, and photography as a foundational theme.

Shoko Nakagawa

1989 Born in Hiroshima Prefecture

2013 Graduated from the Contemporary Expression Field, Department of Design and Craft, Faculty of Art, Hiroshima City University

Working quietly with intangible materials such as sound and light, she practices contemporary art in Hiroshima. Based on experiences from childhood to the present, she attempts to reinterpret local sensibilities unconsciously inherited from daily life and environment.
