JST (President Kazuhito Hashimoto) will host the '14th National Junior Science Koshien Competition,' a nationwide event where middle school students representing their prefectures compete in scientific abilities, from Friday, December 11 to Sunday, December 13, 2026, at Acrie Himeji.
At the national competition, 47 representative teams selected through prefectural competitions—organized by local boards of education—will participate in both 'written exams' and 'practical challenges' across multiple subjects such as science and mathematics, competing for the highest total score. This event is co-hosted by Hyogo Prefecture, Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education, Himeji City, and Himeji City Board of Education, with sponsorship and cooperation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and other organizations. Participation from all 47 prefectures is expected this year, with prefectural competitions already underway, starting with Hokkaido on Monday, June 22.
In today's rapidly changing knowledge-based society, fostering scientific literacy in junior high school education has become increasingly important. However, academic surveys have pointed out a growing disengagement from science among students at this level, along with a lack of platforms where scientifically inclined students can challenge and inspire each other. In response, the 'National Junior Science Koshien' is being held to help students across Japan recognize the connections between science and real-life applications, and to experience the significance and joy of learning science.
JST is committed to systematic talent development that nurtures students' abilities according to their developmental stages. Through initiatives such as the 'National Junior Science Koshien' and the high school version, 'National Science Koshien,' JST aims to expand the base of science enthusiasts and provide students with opportunities to shine.
