Japan's first direct ship-to-ship supply: HVO supply launched at Keihin Port

Kamei Corporation (Headquarters: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture; President and Representative Director: Akio Kamei; hereinafter 'the Company') announces that it has commenced supply of 100% HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) under the next-generation biodiesel fuel brand 'Susteo,' developed by Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Mitsuru Izumo), at Keihin Port using the Ship to Ship method, marking a first in Japan.

A New Fuel Supply Model Accelerating Port Decarbonization

Since HVO is classified as a Category 2 petroleum product, it can be transported by standard fuel supply vessels. This Ship to Ship supply method involves fueling vessels directly from supply ships within the port, which aims to reduce the burden on land-based facilities, improve supply flexibility, and contribute to the decarbonization of the entire port area. This marks the first instance of HVO supply using this method in Japan.

Supply via Ship to Ship Method

'Susteo' is a next-generation biodiesel fuel brand derived from used cooking oil and other materials. As a drop-in fuel that can utilize existing marine diesel engines and fuel supply infrastructure, it is anticipated as a next-generation fuel contributing to the decarbonization of the transport and port sectors.

This project is part of the 'FY2024 Technology Development Support Project for New Energy Promotion' implemented by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Center for Climate Change Actions. It plays a role in developing a supply chain aimed at contributing to Tokyo's decarbonization and the creation of a sustainable society.

In collaboration with Euglena Co., Ltd., Kamei will build a stable supply system for 'Susteo' and accumulate operational know-how through this demonstration, identifying challenges and conducting technical verification for full-scale development in the future. The company will continue to promote sustainable energy supply initiatives, including HVO, to contribute to the expansion of renewable energy and the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
