Okinawa Cellular Telephone Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture; President and CEO: Yasuaki Miyakura; hereinafter 'Okinawa Cellular') and KDDI Corporation (Headquarters: Minato Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroji Matsuda; hereinafter 'KDDI'), along with Tokio Marine Asset Management Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kazuya Nagasawa; hereinafter 'Tokio Marine Asset Management'), have launched the 'Ishigaki Island Mirai Moshio Project' aimed at conserving the endangered seagrass species 'Umi-shoubu' native to Ishigaki Island.

Ishigaki Island Mirai Moshio Project

This project establishes a system to generate and circulate funds and human connections through the sale of blockchain-linked digital art (note). Environmental conservation efforts often remain one-time support initiatives, making it difficult to sustain interest and funding. This project aims to realize a new model of sustainable finance by leveraging blockchain technology to ensure that support is continuously recorded and circulated.

In the Noji district of Ishigaki Island, local residents and elementary school students are leading efforts to restore Umi-shoubu. However, these activities rely on corporate support, and ensuring long-term sustainability remains a challenge.

Through this initiative, supporters can obtain a 'digital certificate of participation (NFT)' by purchasing blockchain-linked digital art.

Utilizing the technology of Web3 startup POCKET RD Co., Ltd.—an investee of the KDDI Open Innovation Fund—the project records participation and support history on the blockchain, visualizing sustained connections between supporters and the local community. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will be reinvested into seagrass restoration activities, aiming to build a co-creation community and achieve sustainable funding circulation.

A key feature of this project is enabling participants to make conservation efforts personally meaningful through experiential engagement.

As a benefit of purchasing digital art, participants can connect with local activities in the following ways:

- Personal or corporate names will be printed on T-shirts worn by elementary students during conservation activities - Participation in guided tours of the Euglena factory on Ishigaki Island, which conducts R&D using microalgae - Installation of name tags on fences placed in the seagrass beds

Additionally, purchasers can join a supporter-exclusive LINE Open Chat, receiving continuous updates on local activities and progress. This allows supporters to feel closely connected to the project and remain engaged over time. Through these experiences, environmental conservation transforms from a distant activity into a personally connected one.

### Local Voices Supporting the Initiative

・Takeshi Ohori, Representative of Eco Tour Fukumimi, promoting conservation activities

"Behind the disappearance of Umi-shoubu, which children have long protected, may lie the impact of human lifestyles. Through the restoration of seagrass beds, we aim to nurture children's ability to shape the future. We sincerely appreciate your warm support."

### Adding New Value to the Project

The digital art features works by Ayako Akamine, an artist from the organization 'Doorless Art Okinawa' that supports artists with disabilities, inspired by the ocean. This project not only contributes to nature conservation but also creates opportunities for artists to showcase their talents.

How to Obtain Digital Art

Okinawa Cellular, KDDI, and Tokio Marine Asset Management will continue striving to realize a sustainable society where people, nature, local communities, and the economy remain interconnected.

*This initiative is the first of its kind in Japan (based on company research) to simultaneously promote endangered species conservation and support for artists with disabilities using blockchain technology.

(Note) 'Blockchain-linked digital art' refers to digital artworks utilizing NFT mechanisms that can record people involved and historical data. In this project, the digital art is used as a 'digital certificate of participation' indicating involvement in the initiative.
