[KSI Online Survey] Survey on Awareness Regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Kioicho Strategy Institute Co., Ltd. (KSI), which provides comprehensive consulting in the public affairs domain, including policy activities and risk management support for companies challenging new industries, conducts online surveys approximately twice a month, focusing on current topics.

Survey Overview

While the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude is expanding into daily life and work, concerns about risks associated with their use, such as the generation of misinformation and information leakage, have also been pointed out. Based on this situation, an online survey was conducted on June 21st targeting 1,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide to understand the actual usage status of AI services, their penetration into society, and awareness regarding expectations and concerns about AI.

Survey Results Summary

78% Currently 'Using' AI Services

Currently, 78.0% are 'using' AI services (services that utilize AI technology to support tasks such as text creation, image generation, information gathering, translation, and programming, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude), while 22.0% are 'not using' them (including those who have used them in the past).

Regarding the frequency of AI service use, 29.6% use them 'about once or twice a week,' 29.0% use them 'daily/almost daily,' 21.7% 'rarely/not at all,' and 19.7% use them 'about three or four times a week.'

Top Usage Purposes: Information Gathering, Text Generation, Personal Consultation

When asked about the purposes of using AI services with multiple responses allowed, the top three were 'information gathering' (62.0%), 'text generation' (34.4%), and 'personal consultation' (21.6%).

86% Believe AI Will Make Life and Work 'More Convenient'

When asked how much more convenient life and work are expected to become due to AI, a total of 86.5% thought they would become 'very convenient' or 'somewhat convenient,' while only 7.7% thought they would 'not become convenient at all' or 'not become very convenient.'

A total of 56.7% felt 'no resistance at all' or 'not much resistance' to using AI services, while 39.1% felt 'considerable resistance' or 'some resistance.'

Top Reasons for Hesitation in Use: 'Risk of Misinformation Generation,' 'Concern Over Information Leakage,' 'Unclear Basis for Output'

When asked about the reasons for feeling apprehension or resistance when using AI services, or the reasons for not using them if they are not currently using them (multiple responses allowed), the top three reasons were 'because there is a risk of generating incorrect information' (65.5%), 'because I am concerned about the leakage of personal or confidential information' (43.9%), and 'because the basis and decision-making process for the output are unclear' (29.8%).

Top AI Risk Concern: 'Spread of False Information and Fake News'

When asked about concerns regarding AI risks (multiple responses allowed), the top three were 'spread of false information and fake news' (70.6%), 'unauthorized use of personal information' (47.1%), and 'misuse for cyberattacks' (42.2%).

When asked about the expected effects of AI (multiple responses allowed), the top three were 'assistance in decision-making in daily life' (54.6%), 'improvement in productivity' (53.9%), and 'resolution of labor shortages' (41.8%).

A total of 57.7% believe AI will have 'a significant impact' or 'some impact' on their work and employment, while 29.6% believe it will have 'no impact at all' or 'not much impact.'

AI Regulation: 58% Say 'Necessary but Not Overly Strict'

When asked about their thoughts on AI regulation, 58.3% believe 'some regulation is necessary, but it should not be overly strengthened,' 20.0% believe it 'should be strengthened,' 11.4% believe it 'should be minimal,' and 3.8% believe 'no regulation is necessary.'

72% Say Development of High-Performance Domestic Models 'Necessary'

In April 2026, the US AI company Anthropic announced its AI model 'Claude-3' with advanced cybersecurity capabilities. This model, which could potentially discover and exploit vulnerabilities in major operating systems and web browsers, was not made publicly available and was provided only to a limited number of companies. When asked if Japan needs to be able to independently develop such high-performance AI models, a total of 72.7% thought it was 'necessary' or 'somewhat necessary,' while 13.7% thought it was 'not necessary' or 'somewhat not necessary.'

Kishida Cabinet: Dissatisfaction Slightly Exceeds Support

38.6% 'support' the Kishida Cabinet (41.3% in the previous survey on May 16, 2026), and 39.0% 'do not support' it (38.8%). This is the first time since the launch of the Kishida Cabinet that dissatisfaction has surpassed support.

Party support rates are: Liberal Democratic Party 19.8% (20.7% in the previous survey on May 16, 2026), Democratic Party for the People 5.3% (4.7%), Japan Innovation Party 4.3% (4.9%), Sanseito 2.8% (2.7%), Team Mirai 2.8% (2.6%), Constitutional Democratic Party (excluding those who also support centrist parties) 1.9% (2.5%), Japanese Communist Party 1.9% (1.7%), Reiwa Shinsengumi 1.6% (1.5%), Center Reform Union (including those who also support CDP or Komeito) 1.3% (1.9%), Center Reform Union (excluding those who also support CDP or Komeito) 1.2% (1.8%), Japan Conservative Party 1.1% (1.3%), Komeito (excluding those who also support centrist parties) 0.6% (0.8%), Social Democratic Party 0.2% (0.3%), Other parties/political organizations 0.8% (0.2%), No party supported 51.4% (50.9%).
