After graduating from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo and completing his master's degree there, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He has held his current position since 2018. His research and criticism focus primarily on British and American poetry. He is the author of numerous books, including "Gazing at Literature," "People Dancing in Office Work," and "Reading Literature by 'Form': Encountering the Magic of Words." He received the Waseda Bungaku Newcomer Award for "Going to the Wilderness" and the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities for "Gazing at Literature."
