Tomokazu Matsuyama, a contemporary artist based in New York, will announce new items in the collaborative project 'TYPE-XII Tomokazu Matsuyama project' with A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, and will hold a special exhibition including installations at ISSEY MIYAKE / NEW YORK. In this project, the design process of A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and Matsuyama's multifaceted images intersect within a single piece of cloth, presenting a new connection between art and design.
This initiative started with the creation of exhibition-limited items for Matsuyama's first large-scale solo exhibition in Tokyo, 'Tomokazu Matsuyama: FIRST LAST', held at Azabudai Hills Gallery in spring 2025. In response to the great反响, this time a coat that reconstructs Tomokazu Matsuyama's artwork into 'a single piece of cloth' will be newly announced, offering a special experience of wearing an artwork to a wider audience.
To coincide with the project announcement, a special exhibition 'TYPE-XII Tomokazu Matsuyama project' by Tomokazu Matsuyama and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE will be held at ISSEY MIYAKE / NEW YORK and its adjacent gallery space 'MADO' from Thursday, July 9, 2026 to Monday, August 31, 2026. The exhibition will feature equestrian statues, a motif Matsuyama has developed in his works for many years, expressed in a new form through A-POC ABLE's unique technology, along with paintings related to this project. The space will feature an installation where fabric embodying Tomokazu Matsuyama's world of work, created using A-POC ABLE technology, is dynamically suspended from the ceiling, allowing visitors to experience the project's worldview alongside the three-dimensional forms that have emerged as coats.
In Japan, the items will be available from Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE / KYOTO, ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442, and ISSEY MIYAKE MARUNOUCHI. At ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442, the items will be displayed alongside fabric printed at a Kyoto workshop.
Artist Statement
This project was an opportunity to once again realize that new forms of expression for a new era emerge when creatives from different fields intersect. I feel a deep sense of inevitability in collaborating with the A-POC ABLE team, who are of the same generation.
History and tradition are always shaped by the accumulation of challenges of each era. I would be delighted if this collaboration reaches people as an experience that embodies the heat of such creation.
