According to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2022, it is estimated that there are 870,000 people in Japan who have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. In response to this situation, the Japan Medical Association (President: Kichiro Matsumoto) has recently created a video titled "Let's Know Correctly! Developmental Disabilities" with the aim of deepening understanding of developmental disabilities, and published it on the official YouTube channel on July 9th.

In the video, Tatsuya Koeda, the director of the Tottori Prefectural Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center, who has been involved in developmental disabilities for over 40 years, explains the background of how people with developmental disabilities are defined as disabled under the law. He then provides easy-to-understand answers to various questions such as "What types of developmental disabilities are there?", "What are the symptoms and characteristics of each type?", "What are the causes of developmental disabilities?", "When can signs of developmental disabilities be observed, and what kind of behavior should be paid attention to?", "What can a typical 5-year-old do?", "Which department should you consult if developmental disabilities are suspected?", "Can developmental disabilities be completely cured?", "What happens to children with developmental disabilities if they do not receive appropriate support?", "Can developmental disabilities be diagnosed in adulthood?", "What are the treatment methods for developmental disabilities?", and "What should be considered when interacting with people with developmental disabilities?".
Additionally, the websites of the Japanese Society of Child Neurology and the Japanese Pediatric Society not only list the names of doctors in charge of developmental disabilities and child mental health consultation doctors, but also introduce what can be done at home and what is being done at schools to support developmental disabilities. This video is also useful for families with children who have developmental disabilities.
The Japan Medical Association states, "I think the opportunities to hear the term 'developmental disabilities' have increased. To create a society where everyone can live comfortably as themselves, it is important for society as a whole to correctly understand and warmly support each individual's characteristics. Please watch this video and deepen your understanding of developmental disabilities."
