Tokyo Launches Overseas University Advancement Support Program for Public High School Students

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has established a new tuition support scholarship program for students attending metropolitan high schools who aim to pursue studies at world-class universities. The goal is to cultivate global leaders who will shape the future of Tokyo and Japan, allowing youth to develop international perspectives early in their academic journey.

This system is designed for those hoping to enroll in overseas universities in the 2027 academic year. Its key features include supporting challenges at prestigious institutions with high tuition fees and a "reservation-type" model where the award is confirmed before university application.

[Key Program Details] - Eligible Students: Currently enrolled students at metropolitan high schools (including secondary education schools and special needs high school departments) or those who have graduated within the last 3 years. - Target Universities: Universities within the top 100 in the THE or QS World University Rankings, or top 10 in QS subject rankings (Arts, Sports, etc.). - Number of Recipients: Approximately 10 students. - Support Amount: Tuition support of up to 4 million or 8 million yen (after deducting 1.3 million yen, equivalent to domestic private university fees) depending on household income. - Duration: Generally 4 years.

[Application and Review Process] Applications will be accepted from July 1, 2026, to August 19, 2026. After a document review, interviews will be held in mid-September, with final results to be notified in early October.
