Mori Building Co., Ltd. (Minato-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Yasuhiro Go) will host "Tony Oursler: Continuum - Magic, Media, and Art," the first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan by Tony Oursler, a leading pioneer of multimedia art in the United States, at TOKYO NODE from today, July 3, 2026 (Fri) to September 27, 2026 (Sun).

A preview for related parties was held prior to the public opening, attended by Tony Oursler himself, along with Reiko Tsubaki and Alice New-Poo Koh, who curated the exhibition.

Tony Oursler stated, "It has been a long-held dream to hold an exhibition at TOKYO NODE. I believe that art is a space where viewers can participate, and that the artwork is completed by the viewer. I hope that this can be realized in this exhibition as well."

Reiko Tsubaki, the exhibition curator, commented, "Mr. Oursler has held approximately 250 solo exhibitions in 34 countries and participated in over 400 exhibitions. In today's world where AI, surveillance technology, and generative media influence perception and beliefs, and where technology and magic intersect, Oursler's work questions what we should believe and re-examines our perception. I am delighted to be able to hold such a first major solo exhibition in Japan at TOKYO NODE, after much anticipation."

Alice New-Poo Koh, co-curator of the exhibition, added, "Through Mr. Oursler's work, we can see the history and trajectory of technology from the 1970s to the present from a unique perspective. It is an exhibition that traces how artists have engaged with and developed technology through various media such as filmmaking, projections, television, and posters."

The exhibition will feature 23 works being shown in Japan for the first time, including two world premieres: the large-scale new work "Chimera" (2026), utilizing TOKYO NODE's dome-shaped gallery space with a ceiling height of 15 meters, and "Empty" (2000), which he began collaborating on with world-renowned musician David Bowie and composer Glenn Branca in 1999.

Additionally, immersive experiences such as the installation "Specular" (2021), featuring various sizes of "eye" orbs floating in darkness, and the first-time-in-Japan feature-length video installation "Immeasurable" (2015-2016) will be presented, offering visitors a sense of "seeing" and "being seen," drawing them into a loop of "observation."

Exhibition Overview

Tony Oursler (b. 1957) is a pioneer who pioneered the expressive style of projecting images onto three-dimensional objects such as video installations and projection mapping. The New York Times (April 27, 2001) described him as "A sculptor of air with video." Oursler is widely known for his enigmatic immersive installations that combine video, sculpture, sound, light, and text.

He was close friends with artists such as Mike Kelley, Constance DeJong, and Tony Conrad, and is highly regarded in the Japanese contemporary art scene, but his works have not been introduced on a large scale in Japan until now. This exhibition is the first major solo exhibition in Japan where visitors can view his early masterpieces and the latest works created for this exhibition all at once. In addition, a selection of over 3,000 collected materials, including science, magic, and unexplained phenomena, which are the source of Oursler's creativity, will be specially exhibited.
