Mori Building Co., Ltd. and the art collective teamLab present the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: EPSON teamLab Borderless in Azabudai Hills, Tokyo. The museum has reopened 'Light Sculpture - Flow' and unveiled new artwork series: 'Asymmetric Existence / 非対称性存在' and 'Chromatic Existence / 色彩性存在'.
To commemorate the reopening of 'Light Sculpture - Flow,' teamLab Borderless is hosting the special exhibition 'On the Asymmetry of the Universe.' The exhibition runs until October 8 (Thu), during which visitors can experience the newly released artworks.
Message from teamLab Representative, Toshiyuki Inoko
We are holding the special exhibition 'On the Asymmetry of the Universe' to celebrate the reopening of 'Light Sculpture - Flow.' In 'Light Sculpture – Flow,' when continuous beams of light form order within the space, a single sculpture emerges. This is not a sculpture as a physical object, but a spatial existence without material boundaries, arising from the flow and order of light.
This special exhibition features two new series from 'Light Sculpture - Flow': 'Chromatic Existence' and 'Asymmetric Existence.'
The 'Chromatic Existence' series arises when color flows through space and color itself forms order, creating a sculpture of color.
The 'Asymmetric Existence' series presents a single sculpture composed of two elements: a light sculpture visible only in real space (not reflected in mirrors), and another light sculpture visible only within the mirror, which does not exist in real space. This is an attempt to expand sculpture from a physical object confined to real space into an existence that transcends real and mirror-image spaces, unified in the viewer’s perception. This existence is not fiction or illusion, but a real, energetic entity. Existence cannot be separated from its environment or from our perception. We do not observe the world from the outside; we exist within its continuum, recognizing existence from within. We hope visitors will have such an experience.
Artworks Featured in the Special Exhibition 'On the Asymmetry of the Universe'
### Chromatic Existence / 色彩性存在
When color flows through space and color itself forms order, a sculpture of color arises.
Here, sculpture is not a physical object, but a spatial existence without material boundaries, created by the order of color.

### Asymmetric Existence / 非対称性存在
Asymmetric Existence is a single sculpture composed of a light sculpture visible only in real space (not reflected in mirrors) and another light sculpture visible only in the mirror (not existing in real space).
Normally, a mirror symmetrically reflects real space. Here, however, real space and mirror-image space are not symmetrical. The two light sculptures appear asymmetrically in different spaces, yet unite in the viewer’s perception as one sculptural existence.
The mirror surface is not merely a boundary that symmetrically reflects real space, but a field connecting entities in real and mirror-image spaces. Asymmetric Existence is an attempt to expand sculpture from a physical object confined to real space into an existence that transcends both spaces and is integrated through perception.

Light Sculpture - Flow
The inside and outside of an ocean vortex are made of the same water, with no material difference. Yet, why do we perceive the vortex as a single existence, even sensing life within it?
What separates the inside from the outside is not material difference, but difference in order. When order emerges within a flow, existence arises even without material differences or boundaries.
In Light Sculpture - Flow, when continuous beams of light form order within the space, a single sculpture appears.
This sculpture differs from a physical object. It arises not from material boundaries, but from flow and order, dynamically changing under the influence of people’s presence and behavior. It is a spatial existence with ambiguous boundaries to the body.
Light Sculpture - Flow is an attempt to expand sculpture from a fixed object into a spatial existence without material boundaries, arising from flow and order.
