The history of frozen foods in Japan is said to have begun in the 1920s with the import of freezing equipment from America.

A freezer with a freezing capacity of 10 tons per day was built in Mori Town, Hokkaido. This location is also known as the site of the current Nichirei Foods Mori Factory.

Initially, the focus was on freezing and preserving seafood, but as refrigerators became widespread in households as one of the "three sacred treasures" during the period of high economic growth, frozen foods also became more familiar.

Frequency of Frozen Food Use: "2-3 times a week" is the most common

Regarding the question "How often do you use frozen foods?", "2-3 times a week" accounted for 30.0%, followed by "About once a week" at 21.8%, and "Several times a month" at 20.7%. It appears that nearly half of respondents use them about 1-3 times a week.

Frozen Foods Are Often Used for "Dinner"

When asked "When do you often use frozen foods?" with multiple selections allowed, the responses were "Dinner" with 481 people, "Lunch" with 374 people, and "Side dishes for bento boxes" with 312 people. It seems many people use them for dinner and lunch.

Most Frequently Used Frozen Foods Are Side Dishes for the Table

When asked "What are the genres of frozen foods you often use?" with multiple selections allowed, "Side dishes for the table (e.g., fried chicken, gyoza)" accounted for 502 people, followed by "Frozen vegetables" with 401 people, and "Noodles" with 373 people. Having side dishes for the table is helpful during dinner.

Key Points When Choosing Frozen Foods Are "Taste" and "Price"

When asked "What are the important points when choosing frozen foods?" with multiple selections allowed, "Taste" was chosen by 648 people, "Price" by 641 people, and "Ease of preparation" by 453 people.

Favorite Frozen Foods and How to Use Them?

This time, we conducted a free-response question asking, "Please tell us if you have any favorite frozen foods." We are introducing some responses as they were originally written.

"I always keep gyoza on hand. Sometimes I fry them, but when I put them in Chinese soup, I can eat plenty of vegetables and mushrooms, and it feels like homemade food despite being easy to make."

"Frozen fried eggplant is convenient when I need one more dish; I just microwave it and it can be used in anything."

"Zucchini from Gyomu Super. Fresh zucchini doesn't last long and you have to use the whole thing, but the sliced frozen kind is convenient because you can use just the amount you need."

"French fries, sweet corn, and edamame are absolutely essential! If I just defrost them and put them out, the kids will eat them, so they're good for a quick fix..."

In the free responses, "gyoza" was mentioned frequently. In addition to being easy to prepare by just frying, some people use them in arrangements, such as adding them to soup.

In addition to staple foods like udon, pasta, and fried rice, many frozen vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, and fried eggplant were also mentioned. People find it convenient that they can use only the amount needed and save the effort of pre-preparation.

The responses suggest that frozen foods are used not only for "time-saving on busy days" but also in various situations such as for meals with children, when an extra dish is needed, and when wanting to use ingredients without waste.

This survey revealed that frozen foods are utilized in various situations, not just for meals on busy days, but also for preparing bento boxes and stocking ingredients.

While the frequency of use and the products chosen vary from person to person, people seem to prioritize points that suit their lifestyle, such as ease of use, taste, price, and ease of preparation. The options are expanding beyond staple foods and side dishes to include vegetables and fruits.
