NEDO has selected two research proposals under the 'Innovative Battery Technology Development and Advanced Analysis' project (hereinafter referred to as this project) aimed at realizing innovative batteries.
Given the anticipated growth in future battery demand, this project aims to establish technologies that contribute to the practical application of innovative batteries with reduced resource procurement risks and high performance.
Through this project, NEDO will develop materials that support the practical application of innovative batteries through industry-academia-government collaboration, contributing to strengthening the competitiveness of Japan's battery industry and enhancing supply chain resilience.
1. Overview
Batteries are a critical technology for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and for digital and electrified societies. Demand for batteries is expected to grow across diverse applications such as electric vehicles, power supply-demand balancing, and data centers. However, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently widely used, and resource procurement risks associated with their constituent materials have become apparent.
In response, NEDO has selected two proposals under this project※1 for the development of innovative battery technologies that differentiate from LIBs in terms of energy density, safety, cost, etc., while also contributing to reduced resource procurement risks.
The goal is to contribute to strengthening Japan's battery industry competitiveness and supply chain resilience by translating the outcomes of this project into practical applications.
2. Selected Themes
The two selected proposals will target the three battery systems outlined below, developing materials that support the practical application of innovative batteries through industry-academia-government collaboration. These battery systems can reduce the use of materials and elements with high resource procurement risks, which are a concern in current LIBs. Furthermore, they are expected to offer favorable characteristics in terms of energy density, cost, and safety, with anticipated widespread application in various fields such as automotive and stationary uses in the future. Additionally, through scaling up material synthesis and piloting industrial manufacturing processes, these efforts will support private-sector evaluations of innovative battery practicality.
