Taiwan's stock market experienced significant volatility on August 8, with the early trading session seeing the highest point of 45,837.12 and a subsequent drop to 45,036.64, resulting in a fluctuation of 800 points. However, TSMC intervened in the late trading session with a substantial buy order of 4,833 shares, driving the overall market up by 255.3 points or 0.56%, closing at 45,734.41 points, just shy of the monthly high of 45,762 points. The trading volume was 958.347 billion NT dollars.
Electronics sector stocks showed mixed performance today. TSMC (2330-TW) started the day with a high of 2,445 NT dollars and fluctuated around the flat line before a surge of 4,833 buy orders in the late trading session, closing at 2,465 NT dollars, up by 25 NT dollars or 1.02%. UMC (2303-TW) showed strong gains, rising over half a limit, while Pegatron (2382-TW) rose over 1%, and Hon Hai Precision (2317-TW) saw a slight increase of 0.21%.
However, Acer Inc. (2308-TW), which showed a strong performance in the early trading session, turned negative in the late trading session, closing down by 0.26%. MediaTek (2354-TW) fell by 0.87%, and Epistar (3711-TW) saw the most significant drop, falling nearly 4%.
Among the Formosa Plastics Group, Formosa Petrochemical (1303-TW) went ex-dividend today, with a reference price of 165.5 NT dollars. It opened at 167.5 NT dollars and quickly filled the gap, rising to lock at 182 NT dollars during the session, driving Formosa Chemicals (1326-TW) and Formosa Plastics Fibre (6505-TW) up by over 2%, and Formosa Plastics (1301-TW) up by over 1%.
The optical communication sector showed strong gains today, with LASERTEK (3081-TW) attacking the limit up, UPDIKE (3363-TW) rising over half a limit, and Wistron (3163-TW), Lite-On Technology (3234-TW), and Cheng Uei Precision (4908-TW) rising by over 4%. Chicony Electronics (6426-TW) rose by over 3%, and Foxconn Interconnect Technology (4979-TW) also saw gains of over 1%.
The PCB sector was also a highlight today, with the three major ABF substrate manufacturers all rising. Chinpo Electronics (3189-TW) rose to lock at 755 NT dollars, Nan Ya Printed Circuit Board (8046-TW) rose over half a limit, and Sinbon Electronics (3037-TW) rose by over 2%. Additionally, Chiyoda (6274-TW) rose by over 4%, LITE-ON Technology (6213-TW), and Chentop - KY (4958-TW) rose by over 3%, while Chicony Electronics (2313-TW) rose by over 2%, and Chicony Electronics (2383-TW) and Gold Like Electronics (2368-TW) rose by over 1%.
