Fueled by Thursday's (October 9) broad gains across U.S. equity markets and a retreat in oil prices that lifted investor sentiment, South Korea's KOSPI index opened sharply higher on Friday (October 10), rising 260.58 points, or 3.57%, to 7,552.49.
The two heavyweight stocks in the Korean market, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, led the KOSPI rally, climbing 3.6% and 4.02% respectively.
On the U.S. side, all three major indices closed in positive territory on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.27%, the S&P 500 gained 0.81%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite surged 1.3%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also posted a strong rebound, reflecting renewed investor confidence in the technology sector.
The positive momentum from Wall Street, combined with easing energy costs, contributed to a risk-on sentiment in Asian markets, with Korean semiconductor exporters benefiting from improved global growth expectations and stronger demand outlooks for memory chips.
