According to the latest Bill of Materials (BOM) analysis by Counterpoint Research, the BOM cost of Apple's (AAPL-US) next-generation flagship smartphone, the iPhone 18 Pro Max (12GB + 1TB), is projected to increase by nearly $300 (approximately NT$9,642) compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The largest cost increase comes from memory components, followed by the adoption of 2-nanometer process SoCs and advanced packaging technologies.
Counterpoint Research指出 that as on-device AI applications continue to evolve, flagship smartphones are seeing simultaneous growth in demand for memory capacity and computing performance, making high-capacity memory the primary driver of the BOM cost increase. Additionally, the next-generation 2nm SoC, which incorporates more advanced process and packaging technologies, is expected to further raise chip costs.
For other components, display and certain parts are expected to see cost reductions compared to the previous generation, benefiting from supply chain maturity and cost optimization. In contrast, camera modules are projected to experience a slight cost increase due to the integration of new technologies.
In response to the overall BOM cost rise, Shenghao Bai, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research, anticipates that Apple may implement a differentiated retail pricing strategy based on storage capacity rather than applying a uniform price hike, aiming to balance profitability across different models.
Counterpoint Research further analyzes that even if the average retail price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max increases by approximately $200 compared to the previous generation, its product gross margin may still be slightly lower than that of the 2025 iPhone 17 Pro Max due to the significant BOM cost increase.
Shenghao Bai stated, 'As AI features continue to be integrated into high-end smartphones, the importance of memory, advanced process chips, and packaging technologies will continue to rise. Changes in the costs of these components will become a key indicator for observing the development of the smartphone market and supply chain.'
