Over the weekend, tensions between the U.S. and Iran continued to escalate. On Sunday, January 19 (Iran time), the U.S. military launched another wave of attacks on Iran after two American soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base in Jordan. This marks the eighth consecutive night of U.S. airstrikes since the collapse of ceasefire negotiations.
On January 18, U.S. Central Command announced that, at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time, new airstrikes against Iran had commenced under the orders of the Commander-in-Chief.
The U.S. military stated that the operation aims to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to swiftly retaliate against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was responsible for the previous night's attack on U.S. personnel stationed in Jordan.
According to local reports from Iran on January 19, the town of Hajjabad in Hormozgan Province was struck by U.S. forces. Residents in Sirik, in southern Iran, reported hearing explosions in the early hours of January 19. A provincial official from Hormozgan confirmed that a U.S. missile hit a location near Sirik at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time.
