Taiwan's stock market attempted a rebound on Wednesday (20th) after plunging nearly 3,000 points in the previous session. The index briefly broke above the 43,000-point mark, but soon reversed course and declined, hitting a low of 41,967.75 points. The intraday volatility exceeded 1,100 points. The weighted index closed down 221.47 points, or 0.52%, at 42,449.70, with trading value shrinking to NT$983.8 billion. TSMC and Hon Hai ended higher, while passive component stocks remained under heavy pressure.

TSMC (2330-TW) rose NT$30, or 1.3%, to close at NT$2,320, regaining its quarterly moving average only to lose it again by the close. Hon Hai (2317-TW) also closed in positive territory, but MediaTek (2454-TW) ended lower. Delta Electronics (2308-TW), ASE Holding (3711-TW), and Taipower (6278-TW) all declined more than 2%.

Passive component stocks remained weak, with Yageo (2327-TW) and Walsin Technology (2392-TW) hitting the daily trading limit down. Hoshen Tang (3026-TW), Sunlord Electronics (6173-TW), Nippon Electric-Chinatrust (3090-TW), and Lide (6175-TW) also closed limit-down. Additionally, UMC (2303-TW) and Lien Yu Metal-Creative (7610-TW) ended the day at the lower limit.

Memory-related stocks suffered losses: Powerchip (6770-TW) dropped 8%, and Macronix (2337-TW) fell 6%. PCB leaders Wusabong (2313-TW) and Zhen Ding-KY (4958-TW) declined 7-8%. OSAT firms Powertech (6239-TW) dropped 7%, while King Yuan Electronics (2449-TW) closed nearly at the lower limit. Taiwan Glass (1802-TW) and Nan Ya Plastics (1303-TW) fell 5-6%.

However, silicon wafer-related stocks performed strongly: Taiwan Semicore (3532-TW) closed limit-up, and GlobalWafers (6488-TW) rose 2%. Among high-priced stocks, Syntec (7750-TW) gained 7%, Airtac-KY (1590-TW) rose 5%, and Cha Sen (3533-TW) and Molex-KY (3665-TW) gained 2-3%, showing relative strength.
