Boeing (BA-US) forecasts that, due to unresolved financial pressure from massive investments and existing customers continuing to purchase its current aircraft models, it will not introduce its next-generation single-aisle passenger aircraft until the late 2030s.
At this year's Farnborough Airshow, CEO Kelly Ortberg made the remarks during a media interview. This reflects Boeing's current conservative R&D strategy, prioritizing the repair of its financial health, debt repayment, and focusing on the production and delivery of existing aircraft models.
Ortberg said, "The market isn't fully ready for this new aircraft. Customers have told us we should focus on our existing products."
He emphasized that airline customers are currently urging Boeing to concentrate on its current models to resolve operational stability issues caused by poor engine durability, parts shortages, and high maintenance costs. Boeing will only initiate a new development project if three conditions are met: financial stability, sufficient market demand, and mature technology.
Boeing's top priority now is completing airworthiness certification for the 737 MAX series (including MAX 7 and MAX 10) and the long-delayed 777X wide-body jet. Only after these tasks are completed can resources be allocated to next-generation aircraft development. Additionally, Boeing plans to increase the monthly production of the 737 from 42 to 52 aircraft to improve cash flow and address the backlog of nearly 7,000 orders.
Meanwhile, rival Airbus has already planned to launch its next-generation A320 narrow-body aircraft in the early 2030s.
Despite competitive pressure in the duopoly market, Ortberg believes the most important thing is to build aircraft that truly meet customer needs, rather than blindly following a rival's timeline. On the technology front, Boeing is leaning toward adopting conventional turbofan engines rather than the more radical open-fan technology currently under development.
