Chinese tech giant Huawei held a new product launch event in Malaysia in July 2024, officially unveiling the Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max series. This launch signifies that after years of isolation under U.S. unilateral sanctions, Huawei has successfully reintroduced smartphones with full 5G network support to the global market, demonstrating a complete breakthrough in long-standing communications technology restrictions.

Tracing back to 2019, U.S. export control rules blocked Huawei’s mass production and global distribution of 5G smartphones. After the Mate 40 series in October 2020, Huawei was unable to launch native 5G flagship models overseas for nearly five years. Devices such as the Mate 50 and P60 series could only operate on 4G networks. However, the 2023 Mate 60 series achieved a hard breakthrough with fully self-developed technology, and the Pura 90s Pro series’ launch in Malaysia indicates that Huawei’s fully in-house 5G production capacity is now sufficient to support simultaneous supply to both domestic and international markets.

Currently, the Pura 90s Pro is already listed on Huawei’s official website in Mexico, and reports indicate upcoming launches in Dubai, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

According to Huawei’s overseas official website specifications, the Pura 90s Pro series clearly lists 5G NR indicators, is powered by the Kirin 9030S chip, and features no compromises in core communication capabilities. Real-world testing by Malaysian tech blogger "Kaixiang Miaoken" shows that the Pura 90s Pro outperforms both Samsung and iPhone in signal strength and upload/download speeds.

On the software side, the overseas version runs EMUI, a customized Android-based system, with Google Mobile Services pre-installed at factory. Major financial and social media apps run smoothly, resolving previous ecosystem pain points. Users can also manually install the open-source MicroG framework to replace Google’s ecosystem, though this may lead to unstable push notifications.

Huawei’s 2025 revenue reached 880.9 billion RMB, a 2% year-on-year increase, bringing its revenue scale close to its 2020 peak.

Although its consumer business dipped during the sanctions period, Huawei maintained its position as the global leader in telecom equipment market share (over 24%). Most allied nations also refused to unconditionally remove its infrastructure. Domestically, China has fully transitioned to HarmonyOS, while overseas markets are supported by EMUI, creating a complementary ecosystem. As 5G-capable Kirin chips are rolled out widely, Huawei’s consumer products are expected to further increase their international market share.
