U.S. semiconductor stocks rebounded on the 20th, prompting a strong upward opening in Taiwan's stock market on the 21st. The index opened at 42,566.93 points, up 117.23 points. With heavyweight tech stocks like TSMC leading the charge, along with strength in the ABF sector and petrochemicals, the index reached a high of 43,659.1 points, surging over 1,100 points, reclaiming the 43,000-point threshold and nearly touching the 50-day moving average. However, early estimates put the day's total trading volume at NT$988.8 billion, still failing to exceed the trillion mark.
Heavyweight stocks rose across the board. TSMC (2330-TW) gained NT$45, or about 2%, reaching NT$2,365. MediaTek (2454-TW) rose NT$150, or about 4%. Hon Hai (2317-TW) gained about 2%, Delta Electronics (2308-TW) about 3%, and ASE Holding (3711-TW) about 2%.
Among the heavyweights, UMC (2303-TW) and Yageo (2327-TW), which had hit the daily trading limit down for two consecutive days, rebounded today, rising approximately 3% and 2% respectively in early trading, showing initial signs of stabilization after a sharp decline.
Deeply oversold passive component stocks rallied collectively in early trading. In addition to Yageo's slight gain, Hosen Tang (3026-TW) and Hwa Hsing (5328-TW) briefly hit the upper limit. However, Walsin Technology (2492-TW), Sunlord Electronics (6173-TW), and Nippon Electric Works Trading (3090-TW), which are under scrutiny, remained below the flat line.
ABF-related stocks became the main focus of capital inflow. Kinpo (3189-TW) hit the upper limit, Unimicron (8046-TW) rose about 8%, and Nanya PCB (8046-TW) gained about 7%.
Escalating U.S.-Iran tensions drove up crude oil prices, further boosting the petrochemical sector. Formosa Petrochemical (6505-TW) and Nan Ya Plastics (1303-TW) both rose about 6%, Formosa Chemicals (1326-TW) about 4%, and Formosa Plastics (1301-TW) about 1%.
