The Shanghai municipal government announced on Wednesday (22nd) that it had convened a compliance guidance meeting with major automakers including Tesla (TSLA-US), BYD (01211-HK), and Xiaomi (01810-HK), as well as dealer groups and online platforms, to strengthen industry compliance with pricing, online marketing, and information release regulations, as part of its campaign to regulate the automotive sector's online environment.
The meeting was jointly hosted on Tuesday by multiple Shanghai government departments, including the Cyberspace Administration, Commerce Commission, and Market Supervision Administration. A total of 15 major automakers attended, including SAIC Motor, Tesla, BYD, Xiaomi Auto, XPeng (XPEV-US)(09868-HK), NIO (NIO-US)(09866-HK), and Li Auto (LI-US)(02015-HK), along with over 80 auto dealership groups. Online platforms such as Bilibili (BILI-US)(09626-HK) and Xiaohongshu were also invited.
During the meeting, Shanghai's market regulators outlined pricing rules that automakers must follow across vehicle manufacturing, pricing strategies, and sales processes.
The Shanghai Cyberspace Administration required automakers and dealers to conduct internal self-inspections to resist improper online marketing practices, though it did not specify which exact marketing tactics were under scrutiny.
Online platforms were instructed to strengthen content moderation and properly handle infringement claims submitted by companies. Shanghai authorities stated they will continue to intensify the regulation of online information in the automotive industry to improve public discourse and information environments.
This meeting reflects Chinese regulators' growing focus on standardizing automakers' pricing and online promotional activities. Amid fierce market competition, automakers’ pricing strategies, promotional messages, and online content are increasingly becoming focal points for regulatory oversight.
