OpenAI's AI agent user base is rapidly expanding, surpassing 10 million users shortly after the launch of ChatGPT Work, intensifying the market rivalry with competitor Anthropic.

On the 21st (Tuesday), OpenAI announced that the combined user count for its two AI agent products—Codex, designed for programming scenarios, and ChatGPT Work, aimed at general task automation—has reached 10 million, nearly doubling from earlier this month.

The release of ChatGPT Work has been a key driver of this growth. Positioned similarly to Anthropic’s collaborative tool Cowork, the product has accelerated the evolution of the competitive landscape in the AI agent sector.

AI agents are widely regarded by the industry as the next core product form following basic chatbots.

Unlike traditional conversational AI, AI agent products can autonomously handle complex, multi-step tasks, significantly reducing user operational barriers.

OpenAI’s expansion in the AI agent business is built upon a massive user ecosystem. Since the launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, the platform has accumulated over 900 million weekly active users, providing a natural traffic funnel for promoting AI agent products.

In contrast, the current 10 million AI agent users represent only a tiny fraction of ChatGPT’s overall user base, indicating substantial room for internal conversion.

The key challenge for OpenAI’s next phase of commercialization will be how effectively it can convert its vast base of users into paying customers for its AI agent offerings.
