D-Link Corporation (2332-TW), a networking equipment manufacturer, has made significant progress in the low Earth orbit satellite sector. The company has directly entered SpaceX's supply chain under its own D-Link brand. According to CEO Chang Chia-jui, D-Link is now the exclusive supplier of dedicated network switches for Starlink's ground-based data exchange nodes.
The first order consists of 20,000 units with a delivery timeline of approximately 10 months. Initial shipments are scheduled to begin in September 2024, starting at a pace of around 500 units per week and 2,000 units per month. The order's impact is expected to extend through 2027.
CEO Chang noted that SpaceX previously used higher-priced U.S. brand equipment at its ground stations. D-Link secured the contract primarily because the customer sought a more competitively priced supplier. As SpaceX continues launching satellites and expanding its global ground station network, D-Link expects stable growth in shipments of its communication equipment as long as the customer continues deployment. The company has already attracted interest and initial discussions from other potential satellite operators.
To meet aerospace-grade supply chain requirements, D-Link's products underwent approximately 7 to 8 months of regulatory review related to national security and economic regulations. All products are manufactured in Taiwan and fully comply with the U.S. NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) and TAA (Trade Agreements Act). The collaboration was facilitated by D-Link's U.S. subsidiary, leveraging over 40 years of global brand recognition and distribution advantages to directly negotiate and conduct product validation with the customer.
Beyond the low Earth orbit satellite sector, D-Link is actively planning its next phase of high-speed network deployment. The company plans to collaborate with fellow networking firm Alpha Networks (3380-TW) by the end of 2026 to announce a comprehensive optical communication strategy. The product line will expand from multi-core fiber optics to switches and other equipment, offering enterprise customers more complete solutions. This will allow D-Link to extend the technical expertise accumulated from satellite communications into the AI and high-speed networking markets.
