Rising oil prices dragged down U.S. stocks, which closed lower on the 22nd. In contrast, Taiwan's stock market opened higher on the 23rd, gaining 256.78 points to reach 45,082.56. However, as TSMC, memory, and silicon wafer stocks weakened, the index turned negative and entered a volatile phase, dropping to a low of 44,676 and losing the 45,000-point threshold. Morning trading volume was estimated at 1.05 trillion TWD.
Among major electronics stocks, performances were mixed. TSMC (2330-TW) fell 25 TWD, nearly 1%, to 2,375 TWD. MediaTek (2454-TW) rose 100 TWD, nearly 2%, to 3,950 TWD. Hon Hai (2317-TW) gained about 1%, Delta Electronics (2308-TW) rose about 0.5%, while ASE (3711-TW) declined nearly 0.5%.
Silicon photonics stocks continued to strengthen. United Microelectronics (3081-TW) hit the upper limit, Win Semiconductors (4979-TW) rose about 9%, LIGANG (3450-TW) gained about 8%, and LITE-ON (8111-TW) and SinoPak (2455-TW) both rose about 7%.
Rising oil prices boosted petrochemical stocks. CPC Corporation (6505-TW) hit the upper limit, Delta Electronics Chemical (1309-TW) rose about 6%, while Formosa Chemicals (1326-TW) and Formosa Plastics (1301-TW) both gained about 5%.
