Let’s review today’s Taiwan stock market!
The Taiwan Weighted Index opened higher today and traded with volatility, closing up 25.03 points at 44,850.81, with a turnover of NT$892.516 billion.
Looking at the positions of the three major institutional investors today: foreign investors bought a net NT$6.957 billion, investment trusts bought NT$5.336 billion, and proprietary traders bought NT$4.193 billion. Combined, the three institutions bought a net NT$16.488 billion. Foreign investors have now bought for two consecutive days, totaling NT$24.3 billion. Proprietary traders shifted from selling to buying, while investment trusts have bought for 22 consecutive days, totaling NT$237.285 billion, indicating strong institutional support.
U.S. stocks were mixed on Wednesday as markets await earnings reports from major tech firms, questioning whether massive AI capital expenditures will translate into corporate profits. Rising international oil prices and higher U.S. Treasury yields have kept inflation and Fed policy expectations in focus, leading to slightly conservative investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.01%, the S&P 500 fell 0.14%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.57%. However, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 0.44%, closing higher for three consecutive trading days, showing relative strength in the semiconductor sector.
Individual stocks: (NVDA-US) NVIDIA rose 2.30%, (AVGO-US) Broadcom gained 2.67%, (TSM-US) TSMC ADR fell slightly by 0.8%, (GOOGL-US) Alphabet reported Q2 earnings that beat market expectations and raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to a maximum of $205 billion, reaffirming its commitment to expanding AI infrastructure. (TSLA-US) Tesla’s revenue exceeded estimates, but profits fell short, leading to post-earnings pressure on its stock. (SMCI-US) Super Micro Computer surged over 19% after announcing new orders exceeding $60 billion in Q4, reflecting strong AI server demand. (TXN-US) Texas Instruments’ latest guidance beat estimates, but market expectations were even higher, resulting in only a 0.99% gain, indicating strict market standards for tech stocks.
The Taiwan Weighted Index opened higher today, briefly breaking above the 45,000-point psychological level, reaching a high of 45,089. However, it faced resistance near the monthly moving average at around 45,301, triggering profit-taking. The index dipped to a low of 44,340, a swing of 749 points. Strong buying in the final session helped recover losses, closing at 44,850.81, up 25.03 points, with turnover of NT$892.516 billion. Today’s volatile movement was due to insufficient volume, making sustained rallies difficult. Additionally, margin buying on the main and OTC boards increased by NT$18.3 billion over two consecutive days (NT$13.788 billion on the main board, NT$4.513 billion on OTC). Without a corresponding volume expansion, the index may remain range-bound at high levels. Overall, after the previous sharp correction, the index has entered a technical rebound phase, but resistance at 45,000 and the monthly line remains strong. A breakout will require stronger volume support.
Going forward, investors should monitor the Fed’s interest rate policy, earnings from major AI firms, international oil prices, and geopolitical risks. With continued AI demand growth, Taiwan-listed companies’ Q3 outlook remains positive, and fundamentals remain intact. Investment strategy should focus on phased buying on dips rather than chasing highs. Key sectors to watch include AI supply chains, optical communications, PCBs, high-speed transmission, semiconductor equipment and materials, robotics, autonomous driving, and high-dividend stocks with solid fundamentals.
Among large-cap stocks: (2330-TW) TSMC rose 0.21% to NT$2,405. Reports suggest it will raise wafer foundry prices starting in 2027, with advanced processes increasing 5–10%, and HPC chips potentially adding another 10–15% fee. Mature processes may also see up to 10% increases to reflect rising material, equipment, and overseas expansion costs. TSMC declined to comment on pricing but emphasized strategic pricing to co-create value with customers. Strong AI demand and tight CoWoS advanced packaging capacity make price hikes beneficial for profitability and long-term capex and growth.
(2317-TW) Hon Hai rose 2.39% to NT$257.5, benefiting from strong AI server demand and growth in cloud and networking businesses. Q2 revenue beat expectations, and the August earnings call is expected to deliver an optimistic outlook. With volume shipments of AI servers, ASIC servers, LPU racks, and next-gen platforms ramping up, foreign brokers have upgraded 2026 and 2027 revenue and EPS forecasts, citing improved high-margin business mix and strong confidence in Hon Hai’s AI strategy and long-term momentum.
(2454-TW) MediaTek rose 0.65% to NT$3,875, rebounding after reports that Google is actively developing its next-gen AI inference chip 'Frozen v2.' Market speculation that MediaTek could re-enter the ASIC supply chain boosted sentiment. Beyond supplying I/O dies for Google’s TPU, MediaTek is expected to benefit from increased ASIC chip foundry and backend packaging demand next year, supporting revenue growth. Technically, the stock formed a bullish confirmation candle; if it holds above the 20-day MA of NT$3,936, breaks NT$4,000 with volume expansion, it could challenge recent highs. AI ASIC development will be a key long-term growth engine.
Individual stocks: (3229-TW) Chengtai, engaged in manufacturing and selling phosphorus copper balls (PCB upstream materials) and PCB drilling services, benefits from vertical integration. Strong demand from AI servers, high-speed networking, and high-end multilayer PCBs has driven over 50% YoY revenue growth recently. Fundamentals are steadily improving, and institutional buying is returning. Investors should monitor sustained AI-related orders, revenue and profit growth, and institutional positioning. If volume expands and the stock holds above short-term MAs amid improving industry conditions, it may continue its rebound trend.
