According to a report by SeekingAlpha, a key leading indicator of industrial economic cycles is showing signs of decline. Data from BofA Securities reveals that so-called "blue-collar" semiconductor stocks—Texas Instruments (TXN-US), Analog Devices (ADI-US), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI-US), Microchip Technology (MCHP-US), ON Semiconductor (ON-US), STMicroelectronics (STM-US), Infineon (IFNNY-US), and Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR-US)—have declined approximately 21% from their June highs.
These "blue-collar" semiconductors are widely used in machinery, automotive systems, and industrial factories. Their demand and stock performance often precede shifts in heavy industrial demand, making them a critical barometer for industrial economic health. Since June, the equal-weighted "blue-collar" semiconductor index has dropped 21%, suggesting weakening demand in related sectors and echoing investor concerns about the broader economic outlook.
The decline may reflect ongoing inventory corrections across the manufacturing supply chain and softening end-market demand. Analysts warn that sustained weakness in this segment could foreshadow a broader industrial slowdown. Monitoring future industrial production data and manufacturing PMI readings will be essential to assess recovery prospects for these semiconductor firms.
