The ongoing surge in AI infrastructure investment continues to boost the semiconductor industry's outlook, prompting markets to reassess the competitive advantages of chipmakers. Intel (INTC-US) saw its pre-market stock price rise 1.65% on Monday, reaching $93.85 per share, extending gains driven by renewed market risk appetite. During the same period, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.28%, and S&P 500 futures gained 0.79%.
While Nvidia (NVDA-US) remains the dominant leader in the AI chip market, Vivek Arya, an analyst at Bank of America Securities, stated in a CNBC interview that Intel is steadily gaining ground amid the AI infrastructure wave. He noted that Intel's second-quarter earnings indicate the company is regaining competitiveness.
Arya highlighted that Intel's core server CPU business grew nearly 59% year-over-year in Q2, reflecting strong demand driven by new product launches, improved product mix, and rapidly increasing deployment needs for Agentic AI. This momentum is fueling a recovery in its data center business and repositioning Intel as a key player in investors' eyes.
Beyond improving demand, the broader semiconductor industry still faces supply constraints, including shortages in wafers, substrates, and advanced process capacity. As a result, large enterprise customers are placing greater emphasis on supply chain stability. With global companies committing hundreds of billions of dollars to build AI infrastructure, Intel’s status as a U.S.-based chipmaker with advanced process capabilities gives it significant strategic value.
Arya acknowledged that in the short term, Nvidia remains more attractive from an investment standpoint. However, he emphasized that Intel’s true long-term value lies in its domestic U.S. manufacturing capacity. Currently, only a handful of companies globally can produce advanced-node chips, and the industry remains heavily reliant on TSMC (TSM-US) for cutting-edge foundry capacity.
Intel is actively advancing its 18A process and next-generation 14A process technologies. If it successfully establishes advanced manufacturing capabilities within the U.S., its competitive edge will become increasingly evident. Moreover, the company has consistently increased capital expenditures, aggressively recruited talent, and hired the former CEO of SK Hynix (SKHY-US) to strengthen its advanced packaging business—clear signals that management is executing a long-term transformation strategy.
Although Arya admitted that Intel’s current stock valuation is no longer cheap in the short term, continued progress on its transformation could unlock significant operating leverage. He forecasts that the company’s profits could grow to four times their current level over the next 3 to 4 years.
From a technical perspective, Intel’s long-term price trend remains bullish, though recent momentum has cooled slightly. The current stock price is 42.1% above the 200-day simple moving average of $65.76, but 15.7% below the 20-day average of $110.79 and 18.9% below the 50-day average of $115.27. Meanwhile, it remains about 3.5% above the 100-day average of $90.28, suggesting the long-term uptrend remains intact, though the stock is currently in a short-term correction phase.
Analyst ratings for Intel remain at an overall “Hold,” with an average target price of $109.07. Several brokerages have recently raised their targets: Baird maintained a “Neutral” rating on July 27 while raising its target to $125; DA Davidson kept its “Neutral” rating on July 24 and increased its target to $100; and Morgan Stanley (MS-US) maintained an “Equal-Weight” rating on July 24 while raising its target to $84.
Additionally, Intel is a major holding in several semiconductor ETFs, including VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH-US) at 7.36%, Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ-US) at 6.64%, and Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF (IGPT-US) at 7.25%. Given its high weighting, significant inflows or outflows from these ETFs could trigger automatic buying or selling of Intel shares, further impacting its stock performance.
