Tensions between Ukraine and Iran have escalated following a recent Ukrainian military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel. On the 27th (Monday), Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that Iran has already been attacking Ukraine by providing military supplies to Russia since the beginning of the war.
During his visit to the UK, Zelenskyy told Sky News chief reporter Stuart Ramsay that Iran has been directly involved in the war from the early stages by supplying drones, technology, and production licenses to Russia.
"Iran began providing Russia with new bases and new technologies from the first year of the war. These are the 'Shahed' drones. They supplied thousands of these drones in the first year of the war, and then they also provided the license," Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Iran has participated in the war by arming Moscow. "What have they done? Did they attack our country? I think so. They already have. The war is already underway," he said.
He added, "We must be cautious; we must do everything possible not to open a new front in any way. But our country must be honest. The Iranians and North Koreans have already attacked our country."
He expressed hope that Iran would not expand its support for Russia, but stressed that Ukraine must be prepared.
On the 25th, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that an Iranian cargo ship was attacked by a Ukrainian long-range unmanned system in the Caspian Sea, causing an explosion that killed at least one crew member and injured several others.
Iran's Foreign Ministry urgently summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Iran, accusing Kyiv of "hostile and criminal acts."
Subsequently, Zelenskyy stated on social media that Ukrainian forces had launched "long-range precision strikes" against vessels transporting military supplies and Russian warships in the Caspian Sea.
