According to the latest foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-wan will travel to Sicily, Italy, immediately after concluding their AI summit in San Francisco, USA, to jointly attend Google's exclusive global tech leaders' retreat—'Google Camp'.
South Korean business sources indicate that the event is personally curated each summer by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and is held at the Verdura Golf Resort in southern Sicily.
It is reported that Jay Y. Lee has been a regular attendee since the event's inception, and Chey Tae-wan also participated in the 2024 gathering. Due to its strictly closed-door format, neither the guest list nor the discussion topics are disclosed, lending 'Google Camp' an air of mystery and positioning it as one of the most influential informal networking platforms in the global tech industry.
Notably, last year coincided with a critical phase in Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations, during which South Korean corporate executives frequently traveled to the U.S. for lobbying efforts, resulting in both leaders' absence.
Industry analysts in South Korea suggest that Lee and Chey's attendance is not only to reinforce their partnership with Google but also to focus on AI development trends, exchange insights with top global CEOs, and actively seek new business opportunities in areas such as semiconductors, cloud services, and generative AI.
Additionally, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang recently appeared at the San Francisco AI summit. The consecutive high-level interactions between Korean and American tech giants on the U.S. West Coast and Southern Europe highlight South Korean firms' strategic push to play a more central role in the AI supply chain.
Externally, this tightly packed 'West Coast to Southern Europe' itinerary is seen as a clear manifestation of South Korea's tech industry aggressively positioning itself in the global AI race.
