China's major memory chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) debuted on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market on Monday (27th), closing up 465.82% from its IPO price. Its market capitalization exceeded 3.28 trillion RMB (approximately $480 billion), making it the most valuable company in the A-share market. The IPO raised about 57.9 billion RMB, setting the highest fundraising record in Asia this year.
CXMT's strong listing has prompted global investors to reassess the competitive landscape of the DRAM industry, leading to a broad selloff in U.S. memory stocks.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 5% at one point. Notably, SanDisk (SNDK-US) dropped over 11%, down nearly 47% from its all-time high on June 22nd, losing around $170 billion in market value within a month. SK Hynix's ADR fell about 10%, briefly dipping below its IPO price for the first time since listing. Western Digital (WDC-US) and Micron (MU-US) also saw significant declines.
According to Counterpoint Research, CXMT's global DRAM market share rose from 3% in Q1 2025 to 8% in Q1 2026, ranking fourth globally. Analysts project that by the end of 2026, CXMT's monthly wafer production capacity will reach 350,000, closely trailing Micron's 375,000.
Despite approaching capacity parity, a technological gap remains. CXMT's current products focus on general-purpose DRAM such as DDR4 and DDR5. In high-bandwidth memory (HBM) — critical for AI applications — most institutions assess that CXMT lags behind Samsung and SK Hynix by three to four years.
Market reactions to this correction vary:
Long-term supply concerns: Investors fear that with ample capital, CXMT will accelerate DRAM supply, undermining expectations of sustained price increases.
Cyclical nature of memory chips: Morgan Stanley warns that memory chips remain inherently "cyclical commodities." Even with AI-driven growth narratives, massive capacity expansion could erode industry profitability. Citron Capital has also noted that NAND flash memory is fundamentally cyclical.
Valuation correction opportunity: Bernstein analyst Mark Li holds a more optimistic view, suggesting the pullback presents a new entry opportunity. He expects AI infrastructure development to sustain demand growth through 2027 and 2028.
