Swiss banking giant UBS Group (UBS) announced its strong second-quarter financial results on Wednesday (29th), with pre-tax profit reaching $3.6 billion, a significant 64% year-on-year increase, driven by strong momentum in its investment banking division.

Despite solid performance, UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti cautioned investors to remain vigilant against headwinds from geopolitical instability. He also shared his views on recent volatility in the AI sector.

According to the financial report, UBS recorded a net profit attributable to shareholders of $2.8 billion in Q2, in line with analysts' expectations. In an interview, Ermotti emphasized that the group demonstrated strong growth trends across all business areas, particularly with a very robust pipeline in investment banking, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and capital markets. Additionally, UBS benefited from a 'vibrant' IPO market, participating in several high-profile transactions, including the landmark listing of SpaceX.

To return value to shareholders, UBS announced a new $3 billion share buyback program, with $1 billion expected to be repurchased within the next three months. Fueled by this positive news, UBS shares rose 2.5% in early trading that day.

Regarding recent market concerns over potential 'aesthetic fatigue' in AI-related themes, Ermotti appeared relatively optimistic. He noted that given the extent of market capitalization surges and capital concentration in AI-related companies over the past few months, the current pullback constitutes a 'healthy and benign' adjustment.

Ermotti believes this correction provides clients with an excellent opportunity to diversify investments and allocate assets more broadly. He remains confident that AI and its infrastructure will continue to impact markets, and that its economic benefits will extend to more industries in the future, beyond just a few sectors today.

However, Ermotti also issued a warning, pointing out that ongoing geopolitical tensions remain a major pressure point for markets. He stated, 'Ongoing volatility on the geopolitical front could create some form of temporary headwinds.'
