U.S. semiconductor giant Qualcomm (QCOM-US) announced on Wednesday (29th) that it has signed a long-term supply agreement with German luxury automaker BMW. Under the agreement, Qualcomm will supply chips for BMW’s future digital cockpit and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), with the collaboration expected to span the next ten years. This partnership significantly strengthens Qualcomm’s position in the automotive semiconductor market.
The two companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement or the number of vehicles expected to feature these chips.
The agreement covers Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis suite of solutions, including digital cockpit processors, autonomous driving chips, and AI accelerators. These will serve as the hardware foundation for BMW’s next-generation AI vehicle platform, enabling in-car entertainment, smart interaction, and driver assistance features.
As automakers accelerate the adoption of AI, autonomous driving, and smart cockpits, competition in the automotive computing platform market is intensifying. In addition to Qualcomm, NVIDIA (NVDA-US) and Mobileye (MBLY-US) are actively supplying chips and software platforms to global automakers, aiming to secure more prominent roles in the smart vehicle supply chain.
Qualcomm, a leading global supplier of smartphone chips, has been actively reducing its reliance on the mobile market in recent years and expanding its automotive electronics business. Its product range has expanded from infotainment systems to digital cockpits, connectivity functions, and advanced driver-assistance systems.
Nakul Duggal, President of Qualcomm’s Automotive, Industrial, Embedded IoT, and Robotics business unit, stated, 'As agent AI and embodied AI drive the next generation of smart vehicles, this collaboration will enable Qualcomm and BMW to jointly define the future of mobility.'
This agreement further expands the existing partnership between the two companies. Qualcomm previously collaborated with BMW to co-develop the Snapdragon Ride Pilot driver-assistance system, which was first deployed on BMW’s electric SUV, the iX3, offering features such as hands-free highway driving, automatic lane changing, and parking assistance.
