Tesla (TSLA-US) released its 2026.14.13 vehicle software update in China on July 31, covering Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles, marking the official introduction of the 'DouBao' large language model (LLM) developed by ByteDance. This move is seen as a significant step by Tesla to enhance localization in the Chinese market and strengthen in-cabin competitiveness.

The AI feature primarily targets vehicles equipped with HW 3.0 or earlier hardware, not the latest AI4 hardware. Additionally, owners must subscribe to the 'Premium Connectivity' service, which costs 9.99 RMB per month in the Chinese market.

The updated intelligent voice assistant not only provides real-time information but also features natural and fluent conversational capabilities. Tesla's official social media stated that the assistant supports diverse interaction modes such as singing, storytelling, and debating, and offers multiple personalized roles like 'Mr. Know-It-All' and 'Music Enthusiast' for users to choose from.

However, currently, the 'DouBao' assistant is limited to information interaction permissions and cannot directly control vehicle hardware functions such as windows or air conditioning. Local commentators believe this reflects automakers' safety底线, as vehicle control involves core operational safety and requires more rigorous testing and verification. Thus, Tesla has adopted a compromise approach: 'introducing a local model to enhance interaction while retaining core control functions.'

According to CnEVPost, Chinese domestic EV manufacturers have long treated AI voice assistants as standard equipment, whereas Tesla's in-cabin interaction capabilities have been considered a weakness. This collaboration marks a substantive step by Tesla to localize the in-cabin experience.

For ByteDance, this partnership signifies its large model business officially entering the 'smart cockpit' golden赛道. Observers note that ByteDance is internally integrating its 'Feishu' and 'DouBao' teams to bridge C-end consumer scenarios with B-end office applications, accelerating the commercial deployment of AI.

Besides 'DouBao,' Tesla has also disclosed cooperation with DeepSeek for AI chat functions. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Alibaba's 'Qwen' large language model has entered deep testing and may enable deeper functionalities such as vehicle control and navigation in the future.

In the North American market, Tesla continues to use the Grok model developed by Elon Musk's xAI. This highlights Tesla's differentiated AI localization strategy across global markets to address linguistic and user habit differences.
