August 5 Taiwan Stock Pre-Market News
1. Geopolitical risks cooled, and AI software giant Palantir (PLTR-US) reported earnings and outlook far exceeding expectations, driving U.S. markets sharply higher on August 4. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged over 1,000 points, setting a new record high, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) jumped over 6%. This momentum pushed Taiwan stock index futures in overnight trading up over 1,300 points, briefly reaching 44,658, breaking above the 44,000 threshold.
2. Wistron (3231-TW) held its earnings call on August 4 and announced its first-half financial results. First-half revenue reached NT$1.74 trillion, up 94% year-on-year, with net profit after tax at NT$24.458 billion and earnings per share (EPS) at NT$7.78, both record highs. Additionally, Wistron's board approved multiple investment proposals to expand operations in Taiwan, the U.S., and Vietnam, with total investment amounting to NT$17.481 billion.
3. Taiwan's stock market experienced sharp correction at the end of last month, briefly falling below the 40,000-point mark. Some private platforms' estimates of individual stock maintenance ratios triggered margin call panic. The Taiwan Stock Exchange repeatedly clarified that the current system calculates margin maintenance ratios on a consolidated account basis, and there is no mechanism requiring margin calls if a single stock falls below 130%. On August 4, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) emphasized 'no hiding, only transparency,' instructing the exchange to integrate key market data—including margin balances and consolidated maintenance ratios—into a 'dashboard' format, expected to launch by the end of Q3, significantly enhancing market transparency.
4. DRAM manufacturer Nanya Technology (2408-TW) announced July revenue on August 4. Benefiting from continued price increases in DDR5 and DDR4 DRAM, Nanya's July revenue surged to NT$43.868 billion, up 49.26% month-on-month and 7.2 times year-on-year, setting another record high. Cumulative revenue for the first seven months reached NT$175.504 billion, up 660.87% year-on-year.
5. World (5347-TW) held its earnings call on August 4. Chairman Fang Lue stated that demand for AI and power management will persist from this year through 2027. With supply shortages and rising equipment, material, and talent costs, wafer foundry price adjustments in 2027 are 'unavoidable.' The company is actively discussing with clients, expecting price hikes to be no less than those in 2026.
6. Hsin Chong Electric (Powerchip) (6770-TW) Acting Chairman Hsieh Tsai-chu made his first public remarks on the company's future operations on August 4. He addressed nearly 700,000 shareholders, stating that with memory, logic foundry, and AI-related businesses gradually taking shape, and financial structure significantly improved after selling its Tongluo plant to Micron, Powerchip is expected to remain profitable not only this year but also in the next two years. He committed to the goal of 'annual profitability and annual dividend payouts.'
