According to U.S. Newsweek and the UK's Independent on August 2 (Sunday), former U.S. President Donald Trump said in a recent interview that Greenland will be 'controlled' by the United States before the end of his current presidential term—January 2029.

Steve Gruber, host of the American conservative media program 'Real American Voice,' said during an interview on July 31: 'I predicted on this show that Greenland would be under our country’s actual control before you leave office.'

Trump responded: 'You’ll be right… Greenland is important for our country.'

From August 1 to 2, Trump posted around 40 messages on the Truth Social platform, some of which included images generated using artificial intelligence (AI). One image showed a giant Trump overlooking Greenland, implying his desire for the U.S. to 'control' the island.

The Independent noted that Trump has long advocated for the U.S. to seize control of Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark. He previously expressed a wish to achieve a 'complete, total purchase' of Greenland and even threatened to impose higher tariffs on goods from certain European countries, including Denmark, to push such a deal forward.

Newsweek pointed out that U.S. officials claim the push to 'control' Greenland is driven by national security concerns. Currently, the U.S. maintains a military presence on the island through the Pituffik Space Base, conducting missile warning and space surveillance operations.

Greenland holds rare earth deposits and other critical minerals essential to modern technology and military supply chains.

Trump’s remarks about 'controlling' Greenland have been met with opposition from both Greenlandic and Danish authorities. Múte Bourup Egede, Prime Minister of the Greenlandic Self-Government, stated: 'Greenland is not for sale.'

He emphasized, 'Greenland will not be owned by the United States, will not be ruled by the United States, and will not become part of the United States.'

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also said: 'It is well known that the United States wants to own and take over Greenland. I hope the entire world knows that this will not happen.'
