Apple is reportedly planning to launch a special 20th-anniversary edition of the iPhone, temporarily dubbed 'iPhone 20,' by the end of 2027. The new model is expected to feature a glass-heavy, ultra-slim design inspired by the iPhone Air, with overall thickness likely matching that of the Air.
Weibo leaker 'Dingjiao Digital' recently claimed that the iPhone 20's body will primarily use glass, with a mid-frame design similar to the iPhone Air. Previous rumors suggested the device might adopt large curved glass surfaces and solid-state buttons, reducing mechanical components for a more seamless, unified appearance.
This isn't the first time 'Dingjiao Digital' has linked the iPhone 20 to the iPhone Air. In July, the account hinted that Apple plans to 'return to glass' for the anniversary model, possibly reusing manufacturing techniques from the first-generation iPhone Air for certain components.
Beyond aesthetics, the iPhone 20's thermal performance may also see an upgrade. The leaker claims the internal heat dissipation plate will expand by approximately '1 inch,' suggesting Apple could implement a larger thermal conduction structure to maintain stability during prolonged high-load tasks.
It remains unclear whether the iPhone 20 will adopt vapor chamber cooling. The iPhone 17 Pro series already uses vapor chambers to efficiently spread heat from the A19 Pro chip, but the thinner iPhone Air does not use this solution.
Given that ultra-slim devices typically struggle with heat dissipation, Apple's decision to boost performance on such a thin device makes vapor chamber integration logical. However, the mention of an expanded heat plate could simply refer to a larger area of traditional thermal materials, not necessarily confirming vapor chamber use.
On the financial side, Apple's stock (AAPL-US) fell about 1.8% on Monday, September 3, closing at $303.42. This marked its fourth consecutive day of losses, as Alphabet's market cap surpassed Apple's, pushing Apple to the third-largest U.S. company by market value.
