South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics (005930KS) (Samsung) has announced it will introduce native stablecoin functionality to up to 800 million new Galaxy smartphones worldwide through its Samsung Wallet, aiming to transform its mobile payment platform into a digital asset management and financial services ecosystem. This move underscores Samsung's accelerating ambitions in the cryptocurrency application market.
According to Samsung's plans, the new feature will support savings and payment accounts pegged to fiat currencies, expected to include major stablecoin tokens such as USDC.
This expansion initiative builds upon Samsung's existing cryptocurrency wallet infrastructure and will leverage the company's domestic market base of nearly 19 million Samsung Wallet users. Going forward, Samsung plans to deeply integrate payments, rewards, and digital assets within a single ecosystem across 61 countries and regions.
In recent years, Samsung has continuously deepened its involvement in the digital asset sector. In addition to holding $408 million worth of equity in Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, Samsung is closely monitoring South Korea's actively developing "Digital Asset Basic Act." Its future technical architecture is expected to support multi-currency stablecoins denominated in USD, KRW, and others.
During the launch demonstration, Circle-issued USDC was showcased, although Samsung has not officially confirmed USDC or USDT as exclusive official partners at this time.
Regarding highly anticipated details such as launch timeline and technical specifications, Samsung has not yet disclosed specific rollout schedules, the initial list of supported countries and regions, underlying public blockchains, custody models, or core mechanisms regarding user private key ownership.
While local users in South Korea have already begun experiencing partial updates, actual implementation progress across regions remains subject to further official announcements.
Industry analysts point out that if Samsung successfully implements this native stablecoin functionality on a global scale, it will significantly lower the barrier to entry for Web3 users, transforming Galaxy phones into portable, all-in-one Web3 payment terminals capable of secure storage, seamless sending and receiving, and in-app marketplace spending. This would open a new chapter in global mobile payments and digital asset applications.
